My First Month

As I write this, it is September 1st, which means I completed my first month with VIPKID.  As of this morning I have taught 14 classes.  I also want to clarify that I did not teach for two weeks during August.  We had family staying with us for a week and then I traveled out of state the following week.

But wait, I thought you could teach and travel at the same time?

Yes, you absolutely can!  I was just starting off with the company, trying to have my baby adjust to a new environment, and I just wanted to relax.  I was terrified that after teaching for one week and then taking two off I would come back to zero bookings.  As you can see that is not the case.

My Schedule

This year I am staying home with my 4 month old son.  I chose to teach for VIPKID because I miss the classroom, and a few extra dollars never hurt anyone.  With that being said, it was my goal to only teach 1-2 classes a day between the hours of 6:30-7:30 am (eastern time).  Perhaps as my son gets older and more predictable I will teach more but for now this schedule works for us.

  • 5:30 Wake Up, Coffee, Get Ready, Make sure the baby has a bottle ready
  • 6:30 Still trying to wake up, enjoy some nice quite alone time, prep for class(s)
  • 6:30/7:00 Teach two classes back to back, record feedback for students
  • 7:45 Done teaching for the day, go give my baby lots of kisses and my husband gets ready for work

During the weekends my schedule is similar however I choose to not start teaching until 7:00 so I can sleep in a little longer.

Plans For Next Month

For September it is my goal to teach Monday through Friday 6:30-7:30.  I’ve gotten pretty good at teaching 2 classes back to back, which I used to be nervous about.  It is my hope to teach more than one hour on Saturdays and Sunday.  I want to try and teach 3 classes back to back next month.  I also have one student who has begun booking me regularly and it is my hope that I can keep seeing him.  It is such a great feeling to be able to get to know a student so you are able to help them in the future because you already know their strengths and where they can grow.

I spent August getting my feet wet and learning more about how to be a teacher for VIPKID, this month I can focus on being a better teacher for them. I’m planning on making some new reward systems and creating props that I can reuse.  I just ordered this laminator and I can’t wait to try it out!

Stay tuned for more updates!
